Normally, CBS’s Two and a Half Men is one of my favorite shows, despite that it stars one of the morally crippled Sheens. Tonight, however, wasn’t funny. The episode was entitlted, “Tucked, Taped and Gorgeous.” It guest starred Matt Roth as a single gay father who was friends with Alan, Charley’s brother.

I tire of jokes to which the punch line is “He’s gay!” In that episode, the punch line was implied for both Charlie and Alan. While I’d like to think that we’ve progressed enough that such an episode would be poking fun at the Neanderthal straight guys who can’t handle it, it hasn’t happened. Being gay is still the bogey man for straight guys, the monster under the bed.

The line from the maid, “The world is a much happier place once you figure out if you’re the pin or the cushion,” was just stupid. It implies that gay guys like to take it in the ass. The reality is that some guys are tops, some guys are bottoms. (Most guys are at least predominately one or the other.) Their straight guy angst wasn’t funny. We’re not there yet.
